Picture of Presidential Proof set

I got the previous thread all mucked up with cemetery pictures. Here is a picture of a very newly issued Presidential coin proof set. The sets cost only $15 and are pretty nice. I remember a web site that posts the actual value of the metals in various coins, where you learn that a nickel is worth $.10 in metal value. If memory serves, these coins have a metal value of around $.06. None the less, these proof sets are nice and are something you prolly want to own.

I think this set would be a real winner in silver or, better yet, in gold. Anyway, this is what we have, I do think you will be unhappy in 10 years if you didn't buy a couple of sets.

Great pic, again, TomD. At 6c worth of metal, I can't get too worked up about it. Let others wish the value up to whatever the next sucker will pay for it. I'm staying with Au and Ag.

Just really incredibly beautiful coins. Flattering images, deep cameo, clear fields, sharp strike, wonderful examples. Thanks. Hope mine look so good.

As far as non-PM coinage goes, this is what it should look like. What they need to flush are the idiotic Roosevelt dimes that replaced the noble Mercury dimes, with Adolph Weinmann's winged Liberty on one side and the fasces on the other. http://www.oldcoinshop.com/coinhistory/10c-1916-45.htm How said that this finest example of American coinage was replaced with an image of the tyrannical FD Roosevelt. Sadder still the currency was devalued in 1965 into a mere token.

However, But as tokens go, these new ones are big improvements over the Susan B Anthony (suffrage-- yuck-- what a stern lesbian she was) or the Squaw-and-papoose ones or the balding bald Ike-the-_____ ones either. lol

A fine group of men. Immortalizing them on trinkets is an atrocity. When do we get the plastic Thomas Jefferson collection. :sarc:

Yeah, I just can't get excited about these. I was taking a look at the coins out of my Washington roll the other day, and they just seem so...cheesy. If they had silver proofs, I'd probably get 'em. I've been spending the Washington coins; I don't have any mint errors I can sell for outrageous $$$ on ebay!

Come on guys, aren't you being a bit harsh on a $15 proof set, whatever the metal of composition? I, too, would much prefer that the set be made from silver.

It is a good looking coin set. And $38 worth of silver in the 20th Anniversary set does sell for $500, divorcing the value of the set from the value of the PM, at least to a large degree.

I think this set is well done and pretty.

Sorry if I insulted you Tom. They are well done, but the first thing that comes to mind is these are the men who said only gold and silver coinage, so I sort of taste puke in my mouth seeing them immortalized in lesser medals.

Hey man, enjoy your set and best of profits someday. Actually my dad used to collect mint set sandwiches and left me some. As usual your pics are great.

Re: Picture of Presidential Proof set

I just ordered this set, mainly because it is nice looking and the price is cheap. Anyways, I have a question. Are these sets where all the graded proofs are coming from that are all over EBAY for hundreds of dollars? I'm really new to numismatics, so what are the odds of finding MS69 and MS 70 proof coins out of these sets? Are people busting them open to have them graded? Are th really good grades fairly common?

Sorry for all the questions.

Yes, good grades are very common. Yes, people are probably breaking sets open and selling them for huge amounts to suckers on eBay. No, you should not buy one from eBay for hundreds of dollars.

Thanks for the answers. I would never buy them from EBAY, as I just purchased the set from the mint. I bought two sets. Maybe I should break open one and have the coins graded?? With all the hype on there, I might be tempted.

Not at all, I didn't take it personally. I didn't design the set or have anything to do with marketing. Feel free to say anything about anything you wish, whether I've photoed it or not.
